The Steele County Blades junior hockey team opened the season by squashing the Rum River Mallards 7-1 in Isanti Saturday, September 25. Connor Mavalli (Boston MA) had a hat trick and added an assist. The Blades outshot Rum River 63-38. Leading 3-0 after two periods, the Blades gave up a goal early in the third. They responded with a four-goal outburst over the final seven minutes.

Movalli, who opened the scoring midway through the first, added back-to-back goals in the final stanza. Charlie Smith (Ontario) had a goal and two assists. Gavin Ellis (Highland, CA) and Ethan Second (Bellingham, WA) each had a goal and a helper. Faribault's Jordan Nawrocki added two assists. Jacob Snyder (Duluth, MN) made 37 saves for the win. The Blades go to Coon Rapids to play the Minnesota Blue Ox Friday and Saturday, October 1 - 2 at 7 pm each night. The home opener for Steele County comes Friday, October 8 versus Rum River at 7 pm at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna.
