Spectacular Saves Not Enough to Overcome Ranked Opponents for Huskies
Both Owatonna High School hockey teams had their hands full on Saturday with state-ranked opponents on their schedules. The OHS boys lost 3-0 to No. 8, Class A Fergus Falls 3-0 at Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna. The Huskies girls fell to No. 18, Class AA Blake 7-1 on the road.
Senior goalies Preston Meier and Ava Wolfe each turned in solid efforts with several highlight reel saves.
The boys contest was scoreless through one period. Fergus Falls, who beat Owatonna's next opponent Rochester Century 6-2 on Friday, broke through Meier midway through the second period. That score maintained until the Otters potted a pair of empty-net goals in the final minute of the third.
OHS plays Century Tuesday, December 21 at Graham Arena at 7:15 pm with coverage on AM 1390 KRFO / 94.7 FM and the app.
In the girls game Saturday, OHS kept the Blake at bay despite some great scoring chances until 14 seconds remained in the first period. A scramble in front of the Huskies net ended with the Bears going to the intermission locker room with the lead.
Blake's trio of Division-I commits had a hand in five of their next seven goals. Suzy Higuchi, only a junior but already committed to Yale, scored a shorthanded goal four minutes into the second period. The Bears added another goal less than a minute later.
The Huskies broke through about six minutes into the third period on Molly Achterkirch's goal which was set up by Ezra Oien.
Owatonna hosts No. 10, Class AA Rogers Tuesday, December 21 on Dudley Otto at Four Seasons at 7 pm.
