Some of the Best COVID-19 Care in the World is Here in Rochester
It isn't really a surprise, but when it comes to the treatment of COVID-19, some of the best care anywhere on the planet is right here in Rochester.
We all know about the world-class healthcare that Mayo Clinic provides, right? I mean, heck, it's only been rated the number-one hospital in the country by U.S. News and World Report for the last five years in a row, so the news that Mayo is providing some of the best care for patients with COVID-19 shouldn't really be a shock, either, I guess.
But that's the word from the Mayo Clinic News Network about a new Mayo survey that looked at mortality rates in COVID-19 patients. And, it contained good news for those battling COVID-19 who were treated here in Minnesota's Med City:
Patients with COVID-19 who received care at Mayo Clinic had lower mortality rates than the national average. Mayo Clinic patients were treated using an integrated, team-based approach for patient monitoring and treatment.
According to this KTTC-TV story, the Mayo Clinic study examined nearly 7,900 COVID-19 patients from March through July of 2020, and found a mortality rate of 1.1 percent. Nationally, though, during that same time period, the mortality rate for COVID-19 patients treated elsewhere was 2.1 percent-- nearly DOUBLE the rate here at Mayo Clinic.
Mayo Clinic leaders noted in the story that there were several reasons responsible for the low COVID mortality rate seen here in Minnesota, including Mayo's 'multi-layer, integrated team approach' as well as its ongoing use of clinical trials. First and foremost, though, the story said, was the 'incredible teamwork mentality demonstrated by those on the frontlines,' at Mayo Clinic.
And, I have to agree: it's those awesome Mayo Clinic employees-- our fellow friends and neighbors here in southeast Minnesota-- who continue to provide world-class healthcare, even in the middle of a pandemic we haven't seen in our lifetimes. Well done, everyone... thanks for your tireless work!
Despite the world-class care provided by Mayo Clinic here in Rochester, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on many other area businesses, however. Keep scrolling to take a look at some of the Med City businesses who, sadly, closed their doors last year.
