Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A man who attacked his estranged wife with a knife while she was working at St. Marys Hospital has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison.

Court records show 59-year-old Augustino Nasona will be eligible for release much sooner because he has been given credit for the nearly 860 days he has already spent in jail. Nasona recently pleaded guilty to a first-degree assault charge through a plea agreement that resulted in the dismissal of an attempted murder charge and another count of felony assault.

Nasona was arrested in late May 2019 after he stabbed his estranged wife in the chest and back several times while she was working in the hospital cafeteria. He was also accused of slashing the knife at a coworker who attempted to intervene. Eventually, A Mayo Clinic Security Officer was able to wrap his arms around Nasona and subdue him by pinning him against a wall.

The victim in the knife attack has since filed a lawsuit against her employer. The lawsuit alleges Nasona had entered the kitchen area of the cafeteria "on several occasions" before the day of the attack and threatened the woman. The lawsuit contends Morrison Healthcare directed the victim to continue working in the kitchen and indicated the company would "handle the trouble with Nasona and make the kitchen a safe place for the work." Court documents indicate the woman suffered serious injuries and continues to suffer and needs treatment.
