The Owatonna High School boys hockey team displayed a quick strike capability that made a 5-3 win over Rochester Mayo at Graham Arena feel not-that-close. Zach Kubicek and Tanner Stendel scored goals 16 seconds apart midway through the first period for a 2-0 lead. Kubicek added a second goal on a power play scramble at the goal mouth for a 3-0 lead after the first period. Dom Valento assisted on both Kubicek tallies.

The Spartans scored a pair of goals a minute apart early in the second period. The Huskies responded less than a minute later with a two-on-one rush with Taylor Bogen scoring from Casey Johnson to go up 4-2 at the 5:03 mark.

The margin remained at two until Mayo notched a power play goal 10:12 into the third period to pull within 4-3. Owatonna answered about two minutes later on a nice Johnson to Valento feed for the 5-3 final margin. Bogen also assisted on the final marker. The Huskies heavily outshot Mayo.

True Gieseke got the win in goal. Owatonna (2-0) will host Mankato East Saturday, January 23 at 3 pm at the Four Seasons Centre. The junior varsity game ended in a 2-2 tie with no overtime being played.

The Owatonna girls basketball team stuck with top-ten rated Mankato West Thursday, losing 63-52. OHS was down just four at the half. Sarah Kingland scored 15 for the Huskies. Lexi Mendenhall scored 11 with eight rebounds. Hillary Haarstad added 10. OHS hosts Rochester John Marshall Saturday, January 23. The game time was moved up to 2:30 pm due to pending weather.

The OHS boys dropped a 63-58 decision to West on Thursday. The Huskies play at John Marshall Saturday at 1:30 pm (also a time change) with the game on AM 1390 KRFO, also now simulcasting at 94.7 FM.

The Owatonna wrestlers split their matches Thursday, beating Eagan 70-12 and losing to No. 3-rated St. Michael-Albertville. OHS is at Mankato West Friday, January 22 with coverage on AM 1390 KRFO/94.7FM

OHS girls hockey had their game with Mayo postponed Thursday. The Huskies go to Mankato East Saturday at 2 pm with play-by-play on Kat Kountry 105 FM. The Owatonna boys swimmers had a face-to-face meet at Winona Thursday.
