Mankato, MN (KROC-AM News) - One of the two men convicted of an assault that left a former Minnesota college football player critically injured 7 years ago has been ordered to prison for repeated probation violations.

A Blue Earth County judge recently imposed a previously stayed 86 month prison sentence on 28-year-old Trevor Shelley. The Mankato man entered a guilty plea to a first-degree assault charge in 2016 for delivering a punch that sent another man's head crashing onto the pavement outside a Mankato bar in 2014. The victim, former Minnesota State-Mankato football player Isaac Kolstad suffered severe and permanent brain injuries in the assault.

Court records indicate Shelley admitted using alcohol and drugs, including cocaine, on multiple locations in violation of the terms of his probationary sentence. It also failed to complete a chemical dependency evaluation and other requirements.

The other man convicted in the case was former Gopher quarterback Philip Nelson. He pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree assault charge for kicking the victim in the head and was sentenced to one-year probation for the misdemeanor conviction.
