Owatonna Wins One-Goal Game; NRHEG Player Reaches 1,000 Points [Sports Wrap]
The first busy sports weekend of the winter prep season featured plenty of highlights. The Owatonna girls' hockey team held off Austin on Rink Buddies Night. An NRHEG junior reached a career milestone. And an Owatonna athlete played two sports on the same day.
Huskies' girls' hockey held off Austin 5-4 on Dudley Otto Rink Saturday night. The Packers scored eight seconds into the game and went up 2-0 less than five minutes into the first period on Kat Holtz second goal. Owatonna patiently battled back, getting goals from five players and outshooting the Packers 43-26
Ezra Oien scored in the first period. Madelyn Simon, Macy Stanton and Kendra Bogen notched second-period goals for a 4-2 lead after two. Holtz completed her hat trick midway through the third. Samantha Bogen scored for OHS a half-minute later, pushing Owatonna's lead to 5-3.
The Packers scored with just over a minute remaining with their goalie pulled for the extra attacker. Austin didn't get another good look and Owatonna won 5-4 to improve to 6-0 on the season. The night ended with a skate with the players on Rink Buddy Night. The Huskies host top-ten Rosemount Monday, December 6 at 7 pm.
BOYS HOCKEY: FARMINGTON 7, OHS 4
The Huskies led 4-2 in the second period before the Tigers rallied to tie the game at 4-all at second intermission. Farmington scored three unanswered goals in the third. OHS (0-2) hosts Faribault Thursday, December 9 at Four Seasons.
ACHTERKIRCH TRADES SHOULDER PADS FOR HOCKEY GEAR
Owatonna senior Grant Achterkirch played in the high school football showcase game at US Bank Stadium Saturday afternoon. Afterward he grabbed a bite to eat and joined the boys' hockey team in Farmington. He is No. 12 in the pictures.
Owatonna's Doug Wanous was on the winning coaching staff with the South team. Blooming Prairie's Drew Kittelson was also part of the event.
NRHEG JUNIOR REACHES 1,000 POINTS
Panther basketball player Sidney Schultz reached the milestone during an 83-14 victory at United South Central Friday night. The Panthers are 2-0.
BLADES HOCKEY PREVAILS
Steele County Blades hockey closed out the local sports weekend with a 3-2 shootout win over Hudson in junior hockey action. The Blades got a power play goal from Ethan Secord, a short-handed marker from Jake Miltko and the shootout tally from Connor Lee at Four Seasons.
