For those of us who love movies, the pandemic has left a big void of entertainment. Many movies are going straight to streaming now. But it's not the same as in the big theater. Big box of popcorn balancing on your lap. Beverage cup large enough to bathe a small child.
Theaters have had it tough. Shut down. Then open for a little bit. Capacity limits. I was able to get into a theater to watch "Tenet" last summer. I could not begin to comprehend the story line. No worries about spoilers here. I truly don't know what happened. But I still loved every minute of it. Previews. Popcorn. Comfortable seat.
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) announced a round of nearly $9 million in Movie Theater Relief Grants across the state. Owatonna Theatre LLC and Paradise Community Theatre Assn. Inc. of Faribault are among the recipients. Overall, a press release from DEED states more than $13 million in relief grants are going to movies theaters and convention centers across Minnesota.
DEED Commissioner Steve Grove said, "Convention centers and movie theaters are an important part of our economy that has been severely impacted by COVID-19. The state and our team at DEED have worked hard to award these grants quickly to help these venues weather the pandemic and bounce back during Minnesota's economic recovery."
Facilities such as Mayo Civic Center, the Minneapolis Convention Center, St. Paul River Centre, the National Sports Center, and Kato Events Center of Mankato also are receiving funds.
