Owatonna senior high school student Lane Versteeg has had a busy start to his senior year despite limitations on a 'normal' school year. He was part of the homecoming court. He was a captain on the soccer team. And was a kicker for the section champion football squad. Thursday he accepted a military academy award.

Versteeg was selected to the 2020 Semper Fidelis All-American Academy and received his plaque during a short presentation at the OHS Small Group Forum with family members and select teachers in attendance. He was one of about 100 students in the country to be recognized.

He said, "I'm grateful for being selected, as well as [being] appreciative of all the people in my life that have given me the opportunity to do something like this and have the character and been a good example for me in my life."

Versteeg thanked his family and coaches. His coaches also thanked him.

Huskies boys soccer coach Bob Waypa said, "I've learned more from him than he's probably learned from me...His leadership is more vocal. Lane is positive in everything he says and does."

Activities Director and assistant football coach Marc Achterkirch said, "The number one most important thing is the integrity and the character of Lane...Just a wonderful young man, a mentor, a leader."
