Owatonna's boys of summer will continue playing baseball through the middle of August. The VFW Post 3723 squad just finished second in the District 1 Tournament to qualify for the state tournament August 12-15 in Austin. Owatonna will take a 21-11 record into the state event and has won 10-of-their-last-12 games.

In the final four of the district, Owatonna lost to Austin 7-4 on Saturday, July 24. They bounced back to beat host Northfield 4-0 as Chris Homuth tossed a complete game. Sunday, July 25 they walloped Stewartville 12-2 as Mitch Seykora twirled a complete game from the mound. Austin won the district title 7-3.

The previous weekend, the VFW swept three games at Fuller Field over Albert Lea and Cannon Falls.

The Owatonna Aces amateur baseball team begins its playoffs Wednesday, July 28 at Stewartville-Racine at 7:30 pm. The Sharks are the top seed in the double-elimination, preliminary 5C bracket. Stewartville-Racine beat Owatonna recently at Fuller Field at Dartt's Park in Owatonna.

The winner will play the winner of Winona and Dodge County Saturday, July 31 in Cannon Falls at 1 pm. Wednesday's losers will face off in an elimination game Saturday in Red Wing at 1 pm.

The other first round matchups feature Lake City at Austin and Pine Island at Hastings.
