In this study, WalletHub drew upon the findings of “happiness” research to determine which environmental factors are linked to a person’s overall well-being and satisfaction with life. Previous studies have found that good economic, emotional, physical and social health are all key to a well-balanced and fulfilled life.

How Did Minnesota Perform In Certain Metrics Compared To Other States?

Wallet Hub looked at 31 key metrics when creating their rankings, and Minnesotans performed well in numerous categories including:

• 29th – % of Depressed Adults
• 1st – Adequate-Sleep Rate
• 17th – Suicide Rate
• 22nd – Long-Term Unemployment Rate
• 9th – Number of Work Hours
• 2nd – Volunteer Rate
• 5th – Separation & Divorce Rate
• 20th – Income Growth
• 3rd – Safety
• 10th – COVID-19 Positive Tests in the Past Week per Capita

The state's high rankings in these metrics helped propel Minnesota to its #2 ranking.

The only state ahead of Minnesota in the rankings was Utah, while Hawaii was #3, California was #4, and North Dakota was #5. West Virginia was dead last in the rankings while Arkansas was #49, Louisiana was #48 and Mississippi was #47.
