Minnesota Still Seeing Big Increase in 100 MPH Plus Speeders
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - A big jump in the number of motorists driving at dangerously high speeds that was noted last year on Minnesota roads is continuing this year.
The State Patrol says the number of speeding citations issued to motorists going over 100 miles per hour is up 92 percent this year when compared to the first two months of 2020. Since the beginning of the year, 132 drivers have been caught speeding over 100 miles per hour, compared with 68 at this time a year ago. The State Patrol also highlighted a one-week period in February during which 17 motorists were ticketed for speeding violations in excess of 100 miles per hour.
Last year, over 1000 tickets were issued for speeding above 100 miles per hour, which was double the number reported in 2019. A preliminary report from the Department of Public Safety indicated that at least 120 motorists were killed last year in crashes where speed was listed as a contributing factor.
