Minnesota May Jobless Rate is the Highest on Record

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has spiked to a level that has not been seen since at least the mid-1970s.

The State Department of Employment and Economic Development today reported the jobless rate rose from an already elevated 8.7-percent in April to 9.9-percent last month. State officials noted the April was revised upward after it was originally reported at 8.1-percent.

The report shows over 302,000 people were listed as unemployed in May as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continued to ravage the economy. Last May, the state listed about 32,000 people as unemployed.

Prior to today's report, Minnesota's highest unemployment rate on record was 8.9-percent in the recession of the early 1980s.
