Have you been dealing with swarms of fruit flies? We hardly even have any fruit in our home, and we've been dealing with them popping up in the last couple of weeks.

Fruit flies are generally not considered a health problem, but more of a nuisance because they can occur in large numbers. Female fruit flies can lay hundreds of eggs in their very short life. It only takes 24-30 hours for a fruit fly egg to hatch. Within a week they are already transforming and after another 5 days, they are in the air. They can start to reproduce in just a couple of days at that point. It's a quick reproductive cycle that can get out of control in a hurry.

So what can you do? Well, the obvious thing first is to get rid of any over-ripened fruit. Empty pop, beer, and wine containers should be recycled. You can also call a pest control company, but that can cost a pretty penny.

What worked for us was a homemade fruit fly trap that was cheap, and simple to use. It's just a few ingredients that you probably already have in your house.

First off, take a small bowl and pour in a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.

Next, you just need a little bit of dish soap.

Then you just need a toothpick.

So to make the trap, put a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a small bowl. Add a few drops of dish soap and stir it up. Then cover the bowl with clear saran wrap. Poke about a dozen holes in it with the point of the toothpick. Place it where you have your fruit fly problem.

As you can see, we started catching them very quickly. The fruit fly numbers have come down in our house dramatically. We didn't need an expensive trap, we just used the things we had already in our kitchen. Hope this helps!
