Large Crowd Confronts Brooklyn Center Police After Shooting Death

Brooklyn Center, MN (KROC AM News) - A deadly police-involved shooting in a Twin Cities suburb Sunday led to a large crowd of demonstrators and mourners and the deployment of National Guard members.

According to a press release from the Brooklyn Center Police Dept. the incident began as a traffic stop around 2:00 pm.

The department says officers "determined the driver of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant." The press release says while the officers were trying to take the driver into custody, he got back into his vehicle. At that point, "One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver." The man drove off but crashed into another vehicle several blocks away before he died.

The department says a female passenger in the man's vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the other vehicle were not hurt.

The department says it's believed police body cameras and dash cameras were activated during the incident.

The man who died was identified as 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

Gov. Tim Walz addressed the situation on Twitter late Sunday night:

As of April 7, 2021, there are 28 children missing from across Minnesota and have still not been found, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
