Kenyon-Wanamingo Wrestlers Receive #3 Seed in Section 2A
The defending Section 2 Class 1A champion Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights are the #3 seed despite having the most wins. Blue Earth Area is the top seed, Maple River #2.
The Knights are 24-5. The Buccaneers 19-5. The Eagles are 19-3. It appears K-W is being penalized for not wrestling teams in Section 2A and not having as many state ranked wrestlers.
The latest Guillotine rankings list Blue Earth Area at #6 in Class 1A. Maple River is in the Lean and Mean. Kenyon-Wanamingo is ranked #12 behind a Zumbrota-Mazeppa team they defeated.
Blue Earth Area losses were to 4 state ranked teams. Forest Lake ranked #8 in Class 3A, Fairmont/Martin County West #3 Class 2A, Kasson-Mantorville #2 Class 2A, Scott West #9 Class 2A. In addition they were beaten by Tracy-Milroy/Balaton/Westbrook Walnut Grove.
Kenyon-Wanamingo's losses are all against state ranked teams. #1 Class 1A LPGE/Browerville, #4 Class 2a Foley, #5 Class 2A Perham, #2 Class 2A Kasson-Mantorville, Lean and Mean Class 1A Ottertail Central.
Blue Earth Area has three state ranked wrestlers. Kenyon-Wanamingo's only ranked individual by Guillotine is 220 pound Carter Quam at #7.
Maple River has 4 ranked wrestlers. Medford in Section 2A has top ranked 152 pound Willie Von Ruden and #2 at 132 pounds Charley Elwood.
The Medford Tigers are the #4 seed in the team competition hosting New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Thursday night. The Tigers have a 7-7 dual record. The Panthers are 9-4 but lost to Medford.
The Maple River Eagles have #7 seed United South Central (11-16) wrestling against #10 St. Clair/Mankato Loyola
Blue Earth area deserves the top seed if you compare scores against Kasson-Mantorville. The Bucs lost 44-27 while K-W fell 69-6.
Maple River losses are to Mankato East, Blue Earth Area and Lake Mills, Iowa.
Kenyon-Wanamingo's only loss in the loaded Hiawatha Valley League was to Kasson-Mantorville.
I know the coaches would probably say you win your matches, you go to state regardless of the path you take.
Kenyon-Wanamingo hosts Westfield (Blooming Prairie/Hayfield) the #6 seed wrestling #11 seed LeSueur-Henderson at 6:00 p.m. Thursday. The Knights then wrestle the winner for the right to advance to the final four in St. Clair Saturday.
