Kenyon-Wanamingo Volleyball Defeats Waterville-Elysian-Morristown
It wasn't the prettiest match but Kenyon-Wanamingo survived five set points in the 4th set to win 3-1 over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Monday night.
Scores were 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 30-28 in the error-infested match.
The first set the Knights took a 4-0 lead before going down 8-4 and 12-6. The Buccaneers had trouble with their serve reception allowing 6 K-W aces while delivering one of their own.
Tesa Erlandson had 3 ace serves, Rachel Ryan 2 and Josie Quam 1 for the Knights in the opener.
The Bucs corrected their service receive errors in the second set but K-W was more efficient on offense while W-E-M struggled with a couple out of rotation calls, a couple in the net calls and a lift.
5'11 senior Leah Berg pulverized the ball on multiple swings for 9 kills in the first two sets for the Knights.
The third set it appeared Waterville-Elysian-Morristown had things figured out plus Kenyon-Wanamingo had 13 errors.
The fourth set was riddled with service errors by both teams. WEM finished the set with 5, K-W 5. It seemed like more because they came in bunches at the end of the match when the teams were trying to close out the set.
The two teams combined for 29 total errors in the 4th set. Kenyon-Wanamingo 14, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 15.
Berg led the Knights with 12 kills and 4 ace blocks. Junior Josie Quam had 22 set assists, 13 digs, 7 kills and two ace serves.
Junior Tessa Erlandson finished the night with 11 kills, 20 digs. Senior Julia Dahl had 6 kills and 20 digs.Senior Stella Rechtzigel tallied 10 kills.
Freshman Carmen Nerison was perfect with her serves, had 20 set assists and 8 digs.
Sophmore Libero Rachel Ryan provided the Cashwise Foods of Owatonna Delivery of the Match with a unexpected kill to end the 4th set giving K-W the win.
The official statistics for the Buccaneers showed a .146 attack percentage for the night with 45 kills and 20 errors. 11 service aces, 13 service errors. 105 digs in the four sets.
Sophmore, 5'8 Alayna Atherton continues to be efficient with a .370 attack percentage in the Castle. 11 kills, 1 error. 5'10 senior Alexandra Heuss hit .219 with 12 kills, 5 errors.
Senior 5' 9 Riley Sammon had 12 kills while hitting .194. Senior setter Mikaya Schuster ended the night with 34 set assists.
Sophmore 5'9 Joesephine Volkmann led the team in digs with 32. Classmate 5'6 Claire Bohlen finished with 22 digs, 8 kills while hitting .021, a couple service aces.
Sophmore Libero 5'6 Grace Baker had 18 digs for the Buccaneers.

Kenyon-Wanamingo (15-3) finishes their conference schedule tomorrow hosting Triton (3-12) on KDHL Radio. Coverage begins 7:00 p.m. if the varsity match is on time.
The Knights last regular season match is next Monday at home against Zumbrota-Mazeppa (20-5).
