Kenyon-Wanamingo Girls Win Physical Game Against Cannon Falls
The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights girls basketball team outscored the Cannon Falls Bombers 23-8 at the free throw line en route to a 54-50 win tonight. The crowd in the Bomber's Hangar was treated to a entertaining, very physical game.
My unofficial statistics had the Knights with 26 turnovers and Cannon Falls with 16. Senior Riley Dummer paced Kenyon-Wanamingo with 21 points, 15 in the second half. The Bombers led at the half 25-19.
The Knights had 13 field goals in the game so the free throw line was clearly the difference. Dummer had three 3 point baskets and classmate Megan Mattson pitched in with 2. Mattson finished the night with 10 points. The only other K-W player with double digit points was Julianna Boyum with 12 points.
Cannon Falls was led by junior Belle Freeburg with 19 points, sophomore Jaci Winchell added 11 points. The Bombers had a 25-19 lead at the half.
During the breaks in the action they played a number of songs from the 1970's and 80's and I couldn't help but think I would hear "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John. It would have been very appropriate.
Our Held Bus Service Knights of the game included Dummer and a couple of substitutes who gave their team quality minutes. Freshman Tessa Erlandson scored 2 points and was a thorn in the side of the Bombers with multiple steals and rebounds. Senior Cera Crouse had two points at the free throw line and no point was bigger than her made free throw with 4.7 seconds to go to make it a 4 point lead for K-W.
Kenyon-Wanamingo enters the Christmas break with a 3-6 record, 1-4 in the Hiawatha Valley League. Cannon Falls is 0-5 in the conference and 1-6 overall.
The Knights play in a holiday tournament at Hayfield over the holiday break opening Friday, December 27 at 6:00 p.m. against Lyle/Pacelli while the Bombers host Randolph next Friday at 7:15 p.m.
