It’s Been A Slow Mosquito Season So Far in Minnesota
They're usually a common part of the warm weather season here in Minnesota, but apparently this year has been a bad one so far for mosquitoes-- which means it's been a decent summer for the rest of us.
Minnesota and mosquitoes, unfortunately, just seem to go together. During most summers, it's tough to enjoy a summer evening out on the patio or deck without constantly swatting away our unofficial state bird.
Minnesota Is Home To A Lot of Mosquitoes
There are, of course, a lot of mosquitoes in Minnesota, right? Not just the number of them in your backyard here in the Bold North, mind you, but the total number of mosquito species. Minnesota's own Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) says there are literally THOUSANDS of species of mosquitoes:
There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide and here in Minnesota we have about 51 different species that are established. Only about half of those local species are considered a nuisance meaning that they bite humans or can vector diseases.
In case you've never heard of it, the MMCD is a state agency created in 1958 and based in St. Paul that provides services to the seven-county Twin Cities metro area. MMCD says their mission is 'to promote health and well-being by protecting the public from disease and annoyance caused by mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks, in an environmentally sensitive manner.'

Why Minnesota Has Fewer Mosquitoes This Summer
However, the good folks at the MMCD might not have to work quite as hard this year as they did in 2025, when mosquito levels surged to the highest levels we had seen in five years. But that's apparently not the case this year.
According to the June 29, 2026, MMCD weekly update, though Minnesota saw its highest weekly total of mosquitoes for 2026, those figures were still below average. And, mosquito traps throughout the Twin Cities have only been catching about 40 percent of the usual number of human-biting varieties.

Dry Weather Has Kept Mosquito Numbers Below Average
For that bit of good news, we can thank the dry weather much of Minnesota experienced in May and June of this year, which has helped keep mosquitoes from hatching. But seeing as it's now early July, mosquito species that thrive in cattails across Minnesota are starting to hatch, and are set to peak this week, MMCD said, meaning things *might* be downhill the rest of the summer. Unless we get a lot of rain, that is.
However, if you find that those bloodthirsty buggers have invaded your yard, the MMCD has five tips on creating a mosquito-free yard, so you can still get out and enjoy our all-too-short summer weather here in the Bold North:
- Eliminate mosquito breeding sources
- Control mosquito larvae
- Use physical barriers
- Control adult mosquitoes
- Protect yourself
