How Many Minnesotans Are Currently Employed?

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) estimates that nearly 3,038,000 residents of the Bold North are currently employed. And of those who have a job, DEED notes that they're likely to work for a small business.

According to the Small Business Administration, a small business employs fewer than 500 employees, DEED noted. Here in Minnesota, over 94 percent of businesses are much smaller, employing fewer than 50 employees.

How Remote Work Has Changed Since the Pandemic

As we mentioned earlier, the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a surge of people working from home. From 2019 to 2021, the rate of fully remote work increased from just 6 percent to almost 18 percent in the United States, according to a previous analysis of census data by the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) of Minneapolis.

But what do those numbers look like today? In a new report, the FRB says that data from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey shows that nearly 22 percent of U.S. workers age 16 and older were working from home at least some of the time.

Remote work rates still vary widely across the country, the FRB noted. States like Massachusetts and Colorado have the highest remote rates in the country, while states like Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas have some of the lowest.

Where Minnesota Ranks for Remote Workers in 2026

Here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, we're currently ranked 12th on the list of states with the most remote workers. The FRB report states that over 24 percent of Minnesota workers had at least partially remote jobs in 2025. Specifically, the report said that 10.7 percent of workers in the Bold North are fully remote, while another 13.5 percent are hybrid.

The FRB report also noted that professional services, finance, health care, and those working in social assistance currently have the highest concentrations of all remote workers. Meanwhile, the share of remote workers in areas like public administration dropped 6 percentage points from 2024 to 2025, and the information sector’s remote work rate dropped about 5 percentage points.
