Minnesota Now the Top State in This Key Money Metric
It turns out the Land of 10,000 Lakes is now also leading the nation in smart money habits. A new report reveals Minnesota just claimed the number-one spot in an important financial ranking.
Minnesota Ranks #1 in the Nation for Financial Health
Living here in Minnesota, we're known for being polite, prepared, and practical. When it comes to money, we're usually pretty reserved. Most of us don’t often brag about our finances, but this one’s hard to ignore. Because Minnesotans just landed at the top of a new nationwide ranking tied to how Americans manage their money.
When it comes to checking the financial health of households here in the North Star State and across the country, the amount of credit card debt each household carries is a key indicator. And, according to the financial gurus at WalletHub, U.S. households have a LOT of debt these days.

How Minnesota’s Credit Card Debt Compares to the National Average
In fact, the average credit card balance is $11,019 per household, according to WalletHub’s latest Credit Card Debt Study. That figure is just over $2,000 below the all-time record.
But here in the Bold North, things are a little different. That's because, according to WalletHub's new report on the States With The Highest and Lowest Credit Scores in 2026, the state with the highest credit scores in the country is none other than Minnesota.
To figure out which states have the highest and lowest credit scores, WalletHub's report said their number-crunchers compared the average credit scores of residents in each of the 50 states as of October 2025, based on TransUnion data. And no state scored higher than we did in Minnesota, topping the survey with an average credit score of 723.

New 2026 Data Shows Minnesotans Have the Highest Credit Scores in the U.S.
WalletHub notes that according to the VantageScore model, the average credit score in the U.S. is 702. The 'good credit' range includes scores between 700 and 749, while 'excellent credit' scores start at 750, so while we're not quite excellent here in Minnesota, our credit scores are still pretty darn good.
Mississippi was the state with the lowest credit scores, coming in with an average score of just 669. Our neighbors to the east, behind the Cheddar Curtain in my home state of Wisconsin, placed 4th in the survey, with an average credit score of 718.
States with the Highest Average Credit Scores according to WalletHub:
Minnesota (723)
New Hampshire (721)
Vermont (720)
Wisconsin (718)
Washington (716)
