Update: Rochester Fireworks Vendor Commits to Makeup Show at No Cost to City

After a long, beautiful Fourth of July filled with backyard bocce ball, bags, and slip-and-slides, my family gathered together in our backyard. We have a perfect view of the Rochester skyline and were excited to see the city's firework show.

The display was originally slated to launch at 10:00 PM, but with severe weather approaching, organizers audibled and bumped the start time up to 9:30 PM to beat the rain. We sat and waited, eyes glued to the sky, but didn't see the first flash until around 9:45 PM—and the show only lasted a few minutes. Now, the City of Rochester has offered an official explanation and an answer on whether or not there will be a makeup show.

What Went Wrong with Rochester's Fireworks?

In an official statement released today, city officials apologized to the community and visitors who packed into Soldiers Field Memorial Park expecting a full celebration.

We recognize the disappointment experienced by community members and visitors when the fireworks show did not unfold as planned.

According to the city, they had planned and paid for a complete, traditional display. When severe weather began tracking toward Rochester, officials moved the launch time up to maximize the chances of safely executing the entire program.

However, a combination of incoming inclement weather and sudden technical malfunctions severely crippled the launch system, resulting in only a "very condensed" show.

Unfortunately, due to inclement weather and technical issues, only a very condensed display could be presented. Once it became clear no additional fireworks could be launched, we shared information on our social media channels, advising attendees the display had concluded and they should leave the area safely. Due to the nature of the event setup this year, the City was unable to make an announcement within Soldiers Field Memorial Park.

Will Rochester Reschedule 4th of July Fireworks?

For those hoping to catch the rest of the display tonight, the city delivered some tough news: the fireworks display will not be rescheduled.

We are actively working with the fireworks vendor to determine the cause of the technical issues and the appropriate next steps. At this time, the fireworks display is not anticipated to be rescheduled for July 5. However, the City remains committed to providing an Independence Day fireworks display in the future. As planning begins for 2027, we will make changes to both the fireworks program and the communication plan to improve the overall experience if unexpected circumstances arise again.
