Faribault Wins Waterville Loses in Jordan Tournament
The Faribault Lakers captured the Consolation Championship while the Waterville Indians lost an extra innings game today to Jordan in the third place game of the 2023 Charlie Larca Memorial Tournament.
The Lakers defeated the Prior Lake Mudcats 6-1 and the Indians were edged 2-1 at the Mini-Met in Jordan.
Tucker Alstead toed the rubber to start the game for Faribault and got the win going 3 2/3 innings of the seven inning game.
Alstead threw 80 pitches, 42 strikes with 6 strikeouts, 4 walks, a hit batter. 2 runs allowed. He had a balk and 3 wild pitches.
Danny Bomsta went 2 1/3 innings, 0 hits or runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts with 29 pitches, 18 strikes.
Nick Rost pitched the final inning with 0 runs, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts while throwing 19 pitches, 15 strikes.
Prior Lake opened the game with a run in the first inning after first batter John Parker was hit by a pitch he advanced to third base on a one out 3-1 count single by Cole Clausen.
A double steal placed runners at second and third base. Parker would score on a wild pitch before Alstead got a strikeout and line out to end the threat.
The Lakers scored 3 runs in the bottom of the third inning which started with #9 hitter Jack Jandro getting a full count walk.
He would steal second and third base while Faribault had back to back fly outs to right field off Prior Lake lefthanded starter Noah Slates.
Danny Pierce was then issued a full count walk.
Cleanup hitter Nate Rost hit a 0-1 count pitch for a hustle double scoring Jandro.
Nick Rost followed with a 2-run double.
It was the end of Slates day pitching. He went 3 innings with 61 total pitches thrown, 33 strikes, 1 strikeout, 4 walks.
The Mudcats answered with a run in the 4th inning. Ben Kelsey had a 1-1 count single. During a strikeout of the next batter he stole second base.
A walk was issued. Kelsey advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Trevor Schrupp stole second base.
Kelsey scored on a wild pitch during a walk that ended Alstead's day.
Bomsta checked in to end the inning with a strikeout looking of the top of the order batter.
Prior Lake brought righty Ben Morrison in to pitch.
For the second consecutive inning Faribault sent 8 men to the plate, scoring 2 runs after collecting 5 hits and leaving the bags loaded.
Jordan Nawrocki had a 0-1 count single to start the inning. Jandro executed a bunt to move him into scoring position.
Joey Grote hammered a RBI single off the fence and was thrown out at second base,
Of course the baseball golden rule kicked in when the next batter Aiden Tobin hit a 1-0 count pitch for a single.
Pierce clubbed a 2-2 count pitch for a single followed by Nate Rost being hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Nick Rost hit a 0-2 pitch back up the middle to score a run. Faribault was up 5-2.
The Lakers got an insurance run in the 6th inning when Nate Rost walked on four pitches to start the inning against Kyle O'Connor, another righty.
Tyler Francis stepped to the plate and walked. Alstead hit into a fielder's choice placing runners at the corners with 1 out.
Nate Rost scored on a wild pitch.
The Rost brothers finished the game with 3 of the 9 hits, 4 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 doubles.
Faribault is now 14-8 and hosts Montgomery Wednesday in a huge Dakota-Rice-Scott League game. First pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Prior Lake fell to 6-12.
Line totals were 6 runs- 9 hits-0 errors- 11 runners left, 7 in scoring position for the Lakers.
2 runs- 5 hits- 2 errors, 9 runners left, 6 in scoring position for the Mudcats.
The third place game lasted 10 innings but took about an hour and a half before the Jordan Brewers walked-off with a 2-1 win and the third place finish in their tournament.
Nate Beckman was outstanding on the mound and at the plate going the distance and collecting 4 hits of the team's 7 including the game winner in the bottom of the 10th inning.
It was a 0-2 count pitch he stroked off Luke Sellner who had just replaced starting lefty Tom Gannon after Gannon threw 119 pitches, 80 strikes with 6 hits allowed, 5 strikeouts, 4 walks, 2 intentional, 1 hit batter..
Beckman threw 99 pitches in 10 innings with 76 strikes, 7 strikeouts, 0 walks, 1 hit batter, 6 hits allowed, 1 unearned run.
With one out in the sixth inning Nate Beckman singled. Nick Krautkremer was a courtesy runner for him and stole second before a fly out.
#3 hitter in the order Dylan Peterson smashed a double off the fence in left field and was thrown out trying to advance to third.
Waterville answered in the top of the 7th (and scheduled final inning) when Josh Cook opened the inning with a single. Shane Sellner laid down a bunt that advanced him into scoring position.
Dalton Grose clubbed a 1-2 count single to center. Cook never hesitated around third base and scored. The cut-off man did bobble the ball for an error on the play.
The tournament implemented the runner at second base to start each inning after regulation giving both teams multiple opportunities to score,
It looked like Jordan was going to get a sacrifice fly walk-off in the 9th but an outstanding throw from Nolan Grose gunned down the runner at the plate.
Jordan is now 18-2. Waterville fell to 12-6.
The Bird Island Bullfrogs (14-3) defeated Cold Spring Springers (11-5) in come-from-behind fashion 9-7 for the Championship of the tournament.
The Bullfrogs scored 5 runs in the last two innings to secure the victory.
Cold Spring led 7-4 through 5 innings before the Bird Island comeback.
The Springers had 4 doubles in the game led by Nick Penick's 2. He finished with 4 hits and 2 RBI but it was not enough.
Cold Spring had a 5-run second inning after the Bullfrogs opened with 2 runs in the bottom of the first.
Trent Athmann drew a one-out walk, followed by a T. Kjersten walk (name not on program roster or website roster for Bird Island)
Aiden Elfring hammered a first pitch RBI single. Jordan Sagedajhl hit an 0-2 count RBI single.
There was a flyout before a walk that loaded the bases and a strikeout ended the threat.
Drew Bulson opened the second with a single to left. Joe Dempsey bunted a 1-0 count single. Drew VanLoy executed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position.
Following a pop out Nick Penick smacked a 1-0 count 2-run double. Tate Wallat hit a 2-1 count double. Brady Klehr hit a RBI single.
Brian Hansen smacked a 2-run double to make the score 5-2.
There were back-to-back walks to load the bases before a ground out ended the inning.
Bird Island got a one out double to right field from Braeden Tersteeg. Athmann flew out with Tersteeg advancing to third base.
Kjersten hit 2-1 count RBI single. He was picked off first base to end the threat.
The Springers scored in the top of the 4th inning.
With one out Brian Hansen clubbed a 2-1 count single. Brad Olson hit a 2-0 count single with Hansen advancing to third base.
Drew Bulson connected for a 1-0 count RBI single.
Dempsey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a pitching change VanLoy hit into a 5-2-3 double play to end the inning.
The bottom of the 4th started with a Zeke Walton 0-1 count single. Taylor hit into a fielder's choice. Tersteeg bunted and beat the throw to first for an infield hit.
A flyout advanced Taylor to third base. Kjersten hit an 0-2 count double scoring Taylor making it Cold Spring up 6-4.
Top of the 5th inning, Zach Femrite stroked a 1-2 count pitch for a single. Penick hit an 0-1 count single,
After a fly out Brady Klehr hits a 2-2 count RBI single. Score was Cold Spring 7, Bird Island 4.
The Frogs 6th inning started with a line out. Tersteeg was hit by a pitch. Athmann was walked. Kjersten hammered a 1-0 count pitch for a home run over right field fence for a 3-run home run tying the game.
James Woelfel came in to pitch the 7th inning which started with a Penick bunt single.
Wallat hit a 1-0 count pitch for a double play. Klehr singled to keep the hope alive before a pop out ended the inning.
Woelfel began the bottom of the 7th with a single to center. Walton bunted Woelfel to second base. Taylor was hit by a pitch.
Tersteeg hit 1-0 count pitch scoring Woelfel for what should have been the walk-off victory.
The Scorebook for the game states Athmann singled in another run to make the final score 9-7.
Bird Island finished the game with 9 runs on 13 hits with 0 errors
Cold Spring had 7 runs on 15 hits with 0 errors.
Eli Emerson started the game for the Springers and went 5 innings with 8 hits allowed, 4 runs, 5 walks, 2 strikeouts while throwing 82 pitches, 52 strikes,
Jack Arnold suffered the loss throwing the final 1 1/3 innings with 27 pitches, 19 strikes, 5 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk, 1 strikeout and 2 hit batters.
Bird Island had 4 pitchers take part in the game. Brad Gass started going 1 2/3 innings with 6 hits, 5 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout. Gass threw 32 pitches, 21 strikes.
