Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota regulators have given the “green light” to a major power line project in southeastern Minnesota.

Xcel Energy says approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission covers the planned MankatoMississippi River Transmission Project, which is being built in partnership with Rochester Public Utilities, the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, and Dairyland Power Cooperative. It includes a 345-kilovolt transmission line between Mankato and Kellogg. The project will also include a 161-kilovolt transmission line between Pine Island and an existing transmission line northeast of Rochester.

A news release says the new transmission lines will improve electricity transfer across the state, including areas in southwestern Minnesota where numerous wind power facilities are located.

The statement says approval of the transmission line routes will allow the project to move into the final design stage, along with right-of-way acquisition and detailed permitting.
