The latest closure includes a recommended detour. Last fall, the City of Rochester announced the closure of 4th Ave. Southwest from 1st Street to 2nd Street Southwest to accommodate underground utility work.
Mayo Clinic’s construction website says the 4th Ave. closure is scheduled to end sometime this Spring. The newest closure will occur two blocks west of the 4th Ave. Southwest closure.

6th Ave. Southwest Closure Starts Wednesday, Jan. 29 in Downtown Rochester, MN
Starting Wednesday evening, 6th Ave. Southwest will be closed in both directions from West Center St. to 1st St. Southwest.
The closure is to accommodate underground infrastructure and utility work, which Mayo says will be completed in phases starting from Center St. and progressing south.
Officials expect the closure, which is slated to begin on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 29, to be in place until the Fall of 2026.
Mayo Clinic is encouraging motorists to follow detours along Civic Center Dr., Broadway Ave. and 2nd St. Southwest to avoid the road closures.
The utility work is to accommodate Mayo Clinic’s $5 billion Bold.Forward.Unbound in Rochester expansion project. It calls for the additional clinical and support buildings for the health-care provider’s downtown Rochester campus.
The expansion is expected to be completed by 2030. Last year, Mayo launched a website providing patients and staff with updates regarding the construction-related disruptions.
