Wisconsin and Minnesota Drivers Get Hopeful Gas News For 2026
As we enter a new year, there are plenty of unknowns ahead. One of the biggest questions on many Minnesotans’ minds is the price of everyday essentials, and near the top of that list sits gasoline.
Gas prices, a moving target in Minnesota
Since 2020, gas prices have climbed significantly, impacting everything from the cost of groceries to road trips across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Higher fuel prices ripple through the economy, driving up transportation costs for goods and services while squeezing household budgets.

In Minnesota, gas prices peaked in 2022 when the statewide average hit $3.78 per gallon. Since then, prices have hovered above $3 per gallon each year. While that level has become familiar, new data suggests relief could finally be on the horizon.
GasBuddy predicts prices could dip in 2026 in Minnesota
Fuel price tracking website GasBuddy has released its forecast for 2026, and the outlook is encouraging for drivers. According to the report, the yearly national average price of gasoline is expected to fall below $3 per gallon for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

If that forecast holds, 2026 would mark the fourth consecutive year of declining gas prices. GasBuddy projects the national average price will land around $2.97 per gallon in 2026, down from an estimated $3.10 in 2025.
What drivers in Minnesota can expect
GasBuddy notes that prices could see a temporary bump during Spring Break travel season, something Minnesota drivers are used to seeing each year. However, by June, prices are expected to begin trending downward. By December, the national average price per gallon is forecast to fall to around $2.83.
For drivers in northern Minnesota and the Twin Ports, lower prices could mean more affordable commutes, cheaper road trips, and some breathing room as winter fuel costs add up.
Lower prices could add up to real savings
The projected drop in gas prices could have a noticeable financial impact. GasBuddy estimates motorists will spend $11 billion less on gasoline in 2026 compared to 2025. The average American household is expected to spend about $2,083 on fuel in 2026, a modest but welcome decrease from last year.
While forecasts can change, the outlook suggests that after several years of elevated prices, drivers may finally catch a break at the pump.
