When you're out and about on Wisconsin snowmobile trails this weekend, you may want to wait to have any alcohol until you're done riding for the day. That's the exact message from the Wisconsin DNR. Don't drink and sled.

The DNR reports there have already been 6 fatalities from snowmobiling this year, and it's just the first month. The DNR says alcohol is among the top factors.

"I can't stress enough how important it is for snowmobile operators to be safe, responsible and sober. Impairment of any kind can have tragic consequences," said DNR off-highway vehicle administrator Lt. Jacob Holsclaw. "Alcohol is among the top factors in fatal crashes."

The fatalities have prompted the Wisconsin DNR to do extra patrols on trails for two safe sledding weekends. The first starts today, January 30, going to February 1st. The second is Super Bowl Weekend, February 6-8th.

There will be increased law enforcement on trails for both weekends. They will be out sharing snowmobile safety tips with riders, and watching for operators who may be impaired or causing safety problems for themselves or others.

The DNR also says to stay on marked trails, slow down, ride with others, stop and look before crossing roads, and operate within your ability.
