We knew that after the weather was mild during the holiday season and into the new year, Old Man Winter would eventually remind people in Minnesota and Wisconsin of just how cold things can get.

It turns out that all the speculation about the cold weather approaching the region, which included a warning about exploding trees, is proving to be true, as the National Weather Service issued a series of Extreme Cold Warnings that begin Thursday and continue into Friday, January 23.

It's important to note that in many of the areas below, the Extreme Cold Warnings then lead to Extreme Cold Watches as the extremely cold weather isn't going away anytime soon.

The NWS says that all people in the impacted areas should dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves, if they must go outside. Pets should also be kept indoors as much as possible
