This morning we were discussing a recent sighting of the Loch Ness Monster. A guy on vacation happened to see something moving in the water, he grabbed his camera and took a picture. Scientists figure if there is anything in that lake, it's probably a big eel, and not the famous serpentine-like monster, Nessie. That got me thinking about lakes around here, and I found a story of a cryptid lake monster in a Wisconsin lake. Yes, it sounds crazy. But, there has been a sighting as recent as 2017.

Devil's Lake State Park

Devil's Lake is in Devil's State Park in southern Wisconsin, three miles south of Baraboo. It's also an Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. The reserve was created in the 1960s to protect glacial landforms and landscapes. That could also lead to an Ice Age explanation that we'll get to in a bit.

The Legend of The Devil's Lake Monster

The story goes that many generations ago, a Native American Tribe was attacked by a vicious monster in Devil's Lake. Members of a hunting party were out at night on a quiet night. The water was still and the moon could be seen reflecting on the water. Suddenly, tentacles shot up from the water and crushed the canoes. Then the monster's tentacles pulled the people under the water, and nobody survived.

According to YouTuber Ben Miller, the screams of those being attacked alerted members of the tribe on shore, and they helplessly watched as everyone perished.

Another Sighting Took Place During A Drought

Eventually, missionaries entered the region, and the Nakota Sioux tribe shared their story of the Devil's Lake Monster. They told another story about how years after the attack, drought had left lake levels so low that it was basically split into two lakes. In the center strip of mud was a huge fish-like creature stuck in the mud. They said the creature had a long neck, small head, and wide body, and it was thrashing trying to swim free. It eventually did and went underwater.

March 4th, 1950 Odd Carcass Washed Up On Shore

Things get even weirder here as a daughter of a local Marshall stumbled on a dead carcass that had washed up on shore. It was described as being 20 feet long, weighing 1,000 pounds, having nine limbs, and the body of a cow. Yeah, that's crazy.

Sighting In 2017

An aerial photo taken by a local blogger Derrik Mayoleth, shows a large, dark shape just under the surface of Devil's Lake.

Surviving creature from the Ice Age?

Some people speculate that whatever is beneath the water could be a surviving species from the Ice Age. Missionaries claimed to have seen a swimming dinosaur-like creature. Either way, there are plenty of weird stories about this body of water.
