Before 2026, Costco members in Minnesota and throughout the country enjoyed the retailer's highly lenient "100% satisfaction guarantee," which allowed them to return almost any item at any time for a full refund without a receipt. Purchases could be looked up through the person's membership or returned at the manager's discretion.

There were understandable exceptions, including a strict 90-day return window for electronics and major appliances, as well as specific requirements for jewelry, diamonds, and tires. Also, cigarettes and alcohol were excluded in some regions, and custom products had special rules.

However, now that the new year has begun, there is a lot of buzz around whether Costco's popular return policy is now quietly being changed in an effort to crack down on customers who may have taken advantage of it.

Costco Return Policy Changes Now Being Reported

While Costco hasn't formally announced a change to its return policy, there have plenty of headlines regarding a shift in that policy that began early in 2026.

Reports indicate that Costco has tightened its famously lenient return policy, with employees now requiring more documentation than previously required. Several customers have noted that Costco employees are increasingly asking for receipts or extra proof of purchase to process returns.

Returns of high-value items like diamonds and jewelry are now subject to a more rigorous review, requiring full documentation/paperwork. Also, stores are now enforcing stricter, 90-day, or no-return rules on electronics, high-value items, and seasonal goods.

Furthermore, Costco is also reportedly now monitoring the frequency and dollar amount of member returns. Accounts with high return rates may be flagged, requiring manager approval, and members with high return rates could ultimately face membership restrictions.

At its core, Costco's generous policy largely remains, and most items, including food, can still be returned if you are unsatisfied, though staff may ask for the item itself to be brought back.

Overall, it's becoming increasingly clear that customers should now be prepared with receipts if making a return, which are easier to track in the Costco app, and know that there is likely no wiggle room in the return policy.
