Huskies Upset Wildcats as Playoff Pandemonium Begins
The Owatonna girls hockey team won their weather-delayed playoff opener Tuesday, blanking Dodge County 2-0 in Kasson. It was the eighth shutout on the season for goalie Ava Wolfe. The win sends the Huskies to top-seed Farmington Wednesday, March 17 at 7 pm with coverage on Kat Kountry 105 FM and the free app.
After a scoreless first period, Olivia Herzog scored her 20th goal of the season 13 seconds into the middle frame with assists from Anna Herzog and Abby Vetsch. With just over two minutes left in the second, Molly Achterkirch scored from Grace Wolfe and Ezra Oien. The Huskies shut down both of the Wildcats power play chances. Ava Wolfe had 32 saves.
Northfield and Lakeville South meet in Wednesday's other semifinal. The winners will play Friday night for the section title at the highest remaining seed.
The Owatonna girls basketball team had their season end with a 52-39 loss at Rochester John Marshall. The Rockets future Division I players Lilly Meister and Katie Hurt combined for 41 points. During a late season win at JM, the Huskies held the pair to just 14 points. OHS graduates seniors Sarah Kingland and Maggie Newhouse.
John Marshall will face top-seed and No. 2 ranked Farmington Friday in the Section 1AAAA semifinals. Lakeville South upset Northfield Tuesday and will go to Rochester Mayo, who won by forfeit over Century in the quarterfinals.
Defending Section 1A boys champ Blooming Prairie lost at Grand Meadow Tuesday 69-50. BP has seven seniors on the roster including Cole Christianson, Alex Miller, Mitchell Fiebiger, Jacob Naatz, Chris Naatz, Alex Piller, and Luke Larkoski.
The Triton boys basketball squad got upset in Dodge Center by St. Charles 89-84 in overtime in Section 1AA. Cobra seniors include Joseph Corley, Jaxon Sackett, Wyatt Haugen, Shane Crofton, Austin Amiot, Haevan Quimby, Abraham Meyer, and Alex Kruckeberg. Kooper Vaughn scored 61 points for the Saints.
