Hundreds Of Hogs Perish in Olmsted County Fire
Eyota, MN (KROC AM News) - An Olmsted County hog producer suffered a significant loss early Thursday after a fire wiped out a building that was housing hundreds of pigs.
Olmsted County Sheriff’s Lt. Lee Rossman says a passerby spotted the large fire southwest of Eyota around 3:30 am.
The building was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived and it took an hour to bring it under control.
Rossman says the owner described the structure as a finishing building and there were 2500 younger pigs inside. All were apparently lost. The owner’s preliminary damage and loss estimate was $900,000.
Rossman says the cause of the fire is under investigation but there were no signs of suspicious activity. He says there are three other buildings at the site but they were not damaged.
The property is located in the 11,000 block of 55th St SE, near the intersection of County Rd 7 and I-90.
Firefighters from Eyota, Dover and Chatfield responded to the fire.
