H & R Block Stat Sheet Stuffer: Trap Perfection

There aren't many opportunities for perfection in sports. Occasionally a pitcher tosses a perfect game in softball or baseball. A perfect 10 score happened on the vault at the state gymnastics meet this past season. Perfection happens a bit more frequently on the line at trap shooting events.

Through the first week of competition, six Owatonna clay target team members have shot a round of 25 straight. That includes a few that occurred during the opening weeks of practice. These individuals are the H & R Block Stat Sheet Stuffers for this week.

Joe Edel has done it twice. Hudson Aase, Cody Bussert, Jesse Deml, Joe Edel and Cole Schroeder each have one 25/25 round.

This is the third year of a varsity team for Owatonna Clay Target and their growth is profound. The team saw a jump of about 20-percent from 70 athletes in 2018 to 87 for the 2019 season in grades seven through twelve. The sport is open to boys and girls. First-year head coach Mike Kingland says the number of girls tripled from last year to this year.

Kingland took over for Dave Schroeder who was the driving force to add clay target to the Owatonna sports offerings. Schroeder passed away from brain cancer earlier this year. The team named their annual invitational in his honor. The event was scheduled for this past Saturday.

With the increase in number of shooters, OHS will compete in the biggest class of trap shooting this season. There are nine classes of teams based on number of team members. Owatonna's conference includes Northfield, Hastings, Farmington, Bemidji, Albany, Pequot Lakes and Pine City. Conferences are also based on number of team members, not school enrollment or geography.

Weekly competitions are conducted on a virtual-basis. Teams shoot at their home range and submit scores online to be compared with the conference opponents. All teams can compete at a state competition in Alexandria in June with the top teams invited to the Minnesota State High School League event also in June. The Huskies qualified for the MSHSL tournament last year.
