Goodhue Survives First State Girls Basketball Game

The Goodhue Wildcats saw a 13 point second half lead get whittled down to one in their 50-48 win over the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers today in the quarterfinal round of the Class A Minnesota Girls State High School Basketball Tournament.  The Wildcats scored just 2 points in the final 5 minutes of the game at Maturi Pavilion on the Iniversity of Minnesota Minneapolis campus.

The Rangers started the game up 4-0 before the Wildcats took a 5-4 lead approximately 4 minutes into the game and never trailed after that.  Goodhue led 28-19 at the halfthanks to three statistics.  The Wildcats had a 18-10 advantage of points in the paint, 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers and scored 8 points at the free throw line to Mountain Iron-Buhl’s 2 points.

The Wildcats ran their offense efficiently in the first half with Senior 6’3 post Lexie Lodermeier providing some nifty assists to sophomore 5’7 Arianna Thomforde.  Lodermeier had 6 first half points and Thomforde 6 points.

Sophomore 5’4 Torrie Rehder finished the game with 9 points, freshman 5’9 Joslyn Carlson also tallied 9 points (7 points and 5 points respectively in the second half) and Lexie Lodermeier had 11 points, 7 rebounds for Goodhue.

The Wildcats did not connect on a three point basket in 5 tries while the Rangers were 5 of 23 in the game.

The statistic of the game was the 16 to 3 advantage in made free throws.  Goodhue was 16 of 26 and Mountain Iron-Buhl 3 of 6 at the free throw line.

The official statistics had Goodhue with 18 turnovers and the Rangers with 17.  Points off turnovers were 20-16 Goodhue converting more miscues into points.

The Wildcats had a 33-28 advantage in rebounds too.

#3 seed Menagha Braves rolled over BOLD 65-54 to advance and will play Goodhue tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in The Barn.
