Fire Damages Faribault Garage
Faribault Fire Chief Dustin Dienst wrote the following News Release detailing a garage fire his department was called to last night.
At 11:14 pm on December 18, 2022, the Faribault Fire Department, Faribault Police Department and North Memorial Ambulance responded to a report of smoke coming from a garage at 965 2nd St. SW. Upon responders arrival smoke was showing from all side of the garage and flames were coming out the window on the back of the garage.
The fire was called in by the occupants of the home and they reported to dispatch that everyone was out of the house. Fire crews made a quick interior attack in the garage and then started ventilating the garage and the breezeway that attached the garage to the home. Utilities were shut off to the structure and the home was ventilated. No fire damage was sustained to the interior of the home but smoke did get into the home making it uninhabitable for the short term. Salvage and overhaul was performed and crews cleared the scene at 1:41 am.
The fire department performed an investigation into the cause of the fire and were able to determine that a space heater that was being used in the garage likely was the ignition source.
North Ambulance did check on one of the occupants of the home put they did not transport.
Fire Chief Dustin Dienst commented, “We are grateful that the occupants of the home escaped unharmed. These types of incidents are devastating at any time of the year, but even more so during the holiday season.”
We were fortunate to have the Fire Chief on our AM Minnesota program this morning and obviously space heaters were discussed because of the cause determination.
Dienst reminded us to read and follow directions that come with the unit.
