Faribault Fire Chief has Winter Holiday Safety Tips on KDHL
Faribault Fire Chief Dusty Dienst stops by KDHL today for our AM Minnesota program and will give us some information about staying safety during the holiday season. Chief Dienst sent me some information and said the three leading causes of home fires in Minnesota all coincide with Christmas and New Year's gatherings.
- Open Flames
Did you know two of every five home decoration fires are started by candles? I know Dienst is not a big fan of candles. Nearly half of all home decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source.
The Faribault Fire Chief recommends using flameless candles for your holiday decorations. The same recommendation he made for Thanksgiving cooking applies for any other holiday gathering too. Never leave food cooking on the stove unattended.
Make sure all your exit paths and exits are free from holiday decorations and clutter.
Keep a timer with you when baking in the oven so you don't lose track of time. Make sure you check on items in the oven frequently.
If you can't tune in at 9:30 a.m. come back here and the audio from the program will be available. We want you and your loved ones to stay safe during the holiday season.
