COVID-19: Third Death and Surge of New Cases in Olmsted County
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Olmsted County reported a surge in new coronavirus cases on Saturday and another death from COVID-19.
The Minnesota Department of Health's daily update on the coronavirus pandemic shows there were another 13 COVID-19 deaths in Minnesota yesterday, which raised the statewide total to 134.
One of the deaths involved an Olmsted County resident in their 60s. It was the third coronavirus-related death in Olmsted County.
Winona County reported two more deaths, raising that County's total to 10. The health department indicated one of the Winona County deaths involved a resident in their 80s and the other person was over 100 years old. Statewide, 10 of the 13 deaths reported today involved residents of long-term care facilities.
The Minnesota Department of Health says testing confirmed 143 new COVID-19 cases statewide. 17 of the new cases were in Olmsted County, which has now seen 194 cases of the new viral infection. The cumulative total statewide is now up to 2356 cases with 1160 people now listed as recovered and not requiring isolation.
23 of the new confirmed cases were in Nobles County where the health department has been dealing with an outbreak at a meat processing facility. At last report, state officials were investigating 69 potential cases in that county.
State officials are also reporting that 47 residents of an assisted living center in Wayzata were relocated on Saturday because of a majority of the staff and the administrators at Meridian Manor are ill from the coronavirus and are unable to take care of the residents. Seven of the residents were taken to hospitals, 13 found housing with family, friends, or other relatives, while the remainder were transferred to other care facilities.
The health department says 228 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 and 116 of them are being treated in intensive care. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 574 people have required hospitalization.
