St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The number of new COVID-19 cases detected by testing in the Rochester area yesterday was the highest in a single day since the pandemic began.

The Minnesota Department of Health says the 32 positive test results in Olmsted County were among the 813 new cases detected statewide. The overall number of positive test results in Minnesota is now over 19,000. About 7400 tests were performed yesterday, which raised the cumulative test total above 180,000.

State health officials also reported a new high mark for the number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day. The total for yesterday was 33, which raised Minnesota's overall COVID-19 death toll to 842. Nearly all of the fatalities occurred in the Twin Cities and involved individuals over the age of 70. There was one death in Anoka County involving a person in their 30s and Goodhue County reported its second coronavirus related death. 25 of the deaths involved residents of long-term care or assisted living facilities.

There was a modest decrease in the number of people currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. The total was down over 30 from the previous day at 534 but the number of patients in intensive care was the highest yet at 233.
