Cover Crops Program Today in Owatonna
The University of Minnesota Extension Service will be putting on a cover crops meeting this afternoon in Owatonna. The program starts at 1PM and wraps up at 4PM in the Steele County Community Center on the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna. Admission is free and you can just register at the door when you arrive. Dr. Scotty Wells, Liz Stahl and Randy Pepin, all with the University of Minnesota Extension Service, will be presenting at the cover crop meeting.
There was not a lot of interest in cover crops until 2013. That was the year the wet spring prevented planting. So, farmers needed to plant a cover crop on the corn and soybean acres that did not get planted. Since then we have learned about the many benefits of cover crops. However, there are some challenges we need to figure out, like establishment of a cover crop in a growing cash crop, residual herbicide effects, and termination so the cover crop does not compete with the cash crop. All these will be discussed this afternoon. .
