Child Dies After Crash Following Police Pursuit of Murder Suspect in Twin Cities
Brooklyn Center, MN (KROC-AM News) - A 6-year-old girl died from the injuries she sustained in a crash following a police pursuit of a murder suspect.
Friday afternoon the Brooklyn Center Police Department received information about an adult male murder suspect being in Brooklyn Center around 4:30 p.m. Police located the suspect in a vehicle and attempted to immobilize it with a tire deflating device that failed.
The suspect fled and was pursued by officers.
Authorities said officers intended to leverage support from the State Patrol Helicopter in following the suspect vehicle from a safe distance, but that was when the suspect vehicle collided with an unrelated vehicle. Brooklyn Center Officers did not attempt to use a Pursuit Intervention Technique to stop the fleeing vehicle.
After the collision, officers immediately rendered aid to the five occupants of the unrelated vehicle and the murder suspect. All five occupants of the unrelated vehicle were taken to a hospital where the 6-year-old girl died from her injuries. A 15-year-old girl remains hospitalized. The other three occupants of the vehicle have been released.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office identified the murder suspect as 28-year-old Hakeem Muhammed of Minneapolis. He was taken into police custody at the scene of the crash and remains hospitalized. He was the only occupant in the suspect vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation.
