Kasson, MN (KROC-AM News) - A battery charging in the garage may have been to blame for a house fire in rural Kasson early today.

That's according to a news release from the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, which indicates the fire was reported just before 1 AM at 27264 Highway 34 East of Kasson. The homeowners, Tom and Margie Bigalke, told the 911 dispatcher there was a fire in their garage and smoke in their home.

The couple said they were awakened by smoke detectors in the house and the responding Dodge County deputies found them outside suffering from smoke inhalation. They were transported from the scene by ambulance to be evaluated.

The news release says the Kasson Fire Department requested assistance from the Byron Fire Department, partly because strong winds were causing the fire to quickly spread into the home. Information about the extent of the damage has not been released. The State Fire Marshal is in charge of investigating the cause of the fire.
