Austin, MN (KROC AM News) - A former Austin funeral home director has been sentenced for having sex with a teenage girl he met while arranging a family member’s memorial service.

Eric Weerts of Cannon Falls was sentenced Friday, the day after his 38th birthday. He pleaded guilty earlier to two counts of third degree criminal sexual conduct.

The criminal complaint alleged Weerts first communicated with the victim through a messaging app and eventually had sexual contact with her multiple times, beginning when she was 15-years-old. Court documents also indicate the girl’s mother told investigators she has a cognitive disability and was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder connected to a previous sexual assault.

Weerts was placed on probation for up to 15 years and ordered to complete a sex offender treatment program. He will also be required to register as a predatory offender.
