The Chisago County Sheriff's Office posted about a popular law enforcement myth yesterday afternoon. The myth is that Minnesota law enforcement can't pursue a suspect across state lines into Wisconsin, and to prove their point they did just that.

The post from the Chisago County Sheriff's Office is a good reminder that life isn't like the movies, where law enforcement some to a stop immediately at the county line/ state line as the criminal drives off. At least that is the case here in Minnesota.

Myth:
If I flee from Chisago County Sheriff's Office Deputies into Wisconsin I'll get away, right?
They can't continue to chase me into another state, right?
False and false.
Late last night a few of your CCSO deputies were working traffic enforcement on US Hwy 8 near Shafer. A traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle and the driver decided to flee.
CCSO gave chase and dispatchers from MN and WI worked their magic to set up communications between the two states. While the CCSO deputies were updating information regarding the fleeing suspect the communications center folks were coordinating a response with our neighbors.
The end result... About three miles into Polk County, WI 6 Polk County Sheriff's Department Deputies and a St. Croix Falls Police Department Officer with his K9 partner Ikar were kindly waiting. Polk effectively deflated the tires of the suspect vehicle with Stop Sticks and his vehicle went into the ditch. Moments later the suspect was greeted by deputies and Officers from MN and WI.
Charges have been forwarded to the Chisago County Attorney's Office for the MN side violations. [Ranging from drug charges to driver's license and fleeing violations.] The suspect was arrested by Polk County, WI Deputies.
So the lesson here is don't run, as in many cases, law enforcement is just going to catch you, eventually.
You can see the Wisconsin Statute 175.46 that allows the pursuit inside either state here from an adjacent county/state here.
