Burglar Cuts Through Roof of Twin Cities Jewelry Store

A would-be thief apparently got away with nothing after sawing his way into a downtown Farmington jewelry store last weekend. The suspect was apparently frightened off by an alarm and fled back through the holes in the roof that the suspect had just created after first trying to leave through the front door. The incident occurred late last Sunday night and the store was closed at the time.

Initial comments from the owner of Gerster Jewelers indicated no merchandise was taken but "He destroyed the whole place," owner Jim Gerster was quoted in the Dakota County Tribune. The report states multiple holes were cut into the roof with damage caused by ceiling tiles and insulation. The thief left behind a tool bag and saw.

The store, a family-owned century-old business, was not able to immediately open after the incident.

After alarms chased away the burglar, police, and fire departments were on the scene quickly. Gerster complimented their quick response, "They did an excellent job and they helped us out and filled us in, and they were thorough about it and made sure no one was in there."

OWATONNA POLICE ASK FOR ASSISTANCE

In an unrelated incident, The Owatonna Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a pick-up truck pictured in the Just the Facts newsletter. The vehicle is a GMC truck pulling an enclosed trailer. The report doesn't indicate the reason the department is looking for it.
