Are Minnesota’s Best Pies Baked Just Outside of Mankato?
Friends from the North Shore and Arrowhead region of Minnesota, what you are about to read will probably shock you, and that's ok, but this needs to be said. The best pies made in Minnesota aren't from your area. Maybe that was true years and years ago, but if you want a slice of perfection or coconut cream, you've got to head to the Rapidan Dam Store/Cafe between April 1st and October 31st.
The Rapidan Dam Store may be one of Minnesota's best-kept secrets when it comes to the desserts it pumps out when it's open April 1st through October 31st. Located just feet away from the Rapidan Dam near Lake Crystal Minnesota, this off-the-beaten-path former service station whips up some great meals, and desserts during some of the best months to be out and about in the land of 10,000 lakes.
This place isn't one of those places with a website or some fancy menus. The Rapidan Store offers you downhome freshly cooked meals, at pretty normal prices, think less than $6 for a burger, as you order off the ever-changing whiteboard menu located by the order window.
On top of the regular menu items like burgers, cheeseburgers, sandwiches, you can also order up fresh potato salad, onion rings, and french fries. And the pie, oh the pie, someone better get Guy Fieri from Triple D Nation out to try some. You don't even have to take my word on it.
Loris Hindenburg wrote about the pies at Rapidan "People talk about Betty's Pies in 2 harbors.... when Betty was alive she could compete but now that she is passed... no. Others talk of Castle Dangers Rustic Inn for great pie and although it is good it is no match for the pie at the Dam Store."
While I am letting the not-so-Southern-Minnesota-secret out of the bag, it's coming from a place of love, and pie. Just writing about this, has me looking forward to April, rather than the impending snow.
Seriously though who's contacting Guy Fieri on this one?
