9-Year-Old Was Fourth Drowning Victim of the Weekend in Minnesota

Woodbury, MN (KROC-AM News) - What had already been a deadly weekend on Minnesota lakes and rivers continued Sunday evening in Woodbury.

Woodbury Public Safety says police officers and firefighters responded to a swimming beach around 6 PM after a nine-year-old girl was reported missing. A news release says the child was last seen walking out of the water at Carver Lake Park Beach to some nearby picnic tables.

Police officers then coordinated a search in the water by forming a search line and the missing child was located underwater near the edge of a designated swimming area about 15 minutes later. She was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

After receiving emergency CPR at the scene, the young victim was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released.

Three other drowning deaths were reported in Minnesota over the weekend. An 18-year-old man died after Saturday jumping into a quarry near St. Cloud, a 46-year-old man drowned while swimming Saturday in the St. Croix River at William O'Brien State Park, and a 34-year-old man died after a boating accident in Aitkin County on Friday.

In addition to those tragedies, the Anoka County Sheriff's Office reported that a 2-year-old child was unresponsive after being pulled from a pond in the City of Ham Lake Saturday evening. Officials say the toddler was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Information about the child’s condition is not available.
