Campfire season is here, and over the weekend I ended up sitting around four different fires. Needless to say, I smelled like a charred log by Sunday night.

At one of the fires, my car was parked with the windows down right in line with where the smoke was blowing. I didn't think anything of it, I didn't have anything in my car that would be too affected. I was wrong. Monday morning I put on a face mask to go into work and almost gagged from the intense campfire smell. That mask is going to need washing.

That incident lead me to Google to find the best way to get campfire smell out of your items this summer that might end up getting a little smoky.

1. Wash Items in Hot Water

When washing your favorite hoodie after a night by the fire, be sure to use hot water. Hot water allows the clothing fibers to open up and release the smoky scent during the washing process.

2. White Vinegar

Washing clothes with white vinegar is a game-changer when wanting to remove excessive odor. Just add one cup of white vinegar after you’ve added detergent to your load, and wash as normal. And no, your clothes won't smell like vinegar when they are done being washed.

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda acts as a deodorizer, absorbing unwanted smells from soft surfaces. The best way to use it with laundry is to add your detergent and soak for about five minutes, then add a half cup of baking soda to the load, and wash it. I've used this method on so many smelly loads of campfire clothes and it works wonders.

4. Use Vodka to Remove Smoke From Hair

I haven't tried this method for myself, but I will for sure give it a go this summer. Mix equal parts of vodka to water in a spray bottle and spritz onto your hair. Thoroughly coat it, and within 20-30 minutes the mixture should evaporate taking the smoky scent with it.

5. Dryer Sheets

It's like dry shampoo for your stuff. Toss a box of dryer sheets into your car, and use them to rub down things like your pants, hat, shirt, or hair.

Get out there and make some great memories around the fire this summer, and don't worry about the smoky smell.
