On Thursday morning the latest 14-day COVID-19 average rate by county report was released by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The report shows a jump in counties over the 50 cases per 10,000 resident threshold that is just one of the numbers that school districts look at to determine when to go to an all distance-learning plan. The latest report shows that the number of counties over that 50 case threshold nearly doubled in 4 weeks from 19 to 34 counties. Last week the number of counties with an average of 50 cases per 10k residents was 25.

Also for the first time since the report began in August, there were no counties with an average of 0 to less than 10, when the report first started there were 25 counties listed with an average of 0 to less than 10.

The highest average for the latest 14-day period was in Chippewa County at 115.74. This week's report had 6 counties with averages higher than 100 cases per 10,000 residents.

A majority of counties that were seeing the highest averages were located in Western, Central, and Northern Minnesota, generally in counties that are less populated than counties closer to the metro area.
