Albert Lea Area won a series of close decisions in the lower weights and held off Owatonna in the upper bouts to knock off the defending section champion Huskies 33-19 Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. The Tigers won five straight matches from 113 pounds to 138 by a total of seven points. Albert Lea led 15-3 at that point.

Owatonna's gymnastics team turned in a school-record performance of 149.8 to capture their third consecutive Section 1AA crown Friday night at Rochester John Marshall High School. The Huskies will compete at the state meet Friday, February 23 at the University of Minnesota's Sports Pavilion. OHS was third at state last year.

The Owatonna wrestlers made quick work of Rochester Century in Thursday's Section 1AAA quarterfinals at the OHS gym. The Huskies won 70-0 in their first action in defense of their section crown from 2017. Owatonna will face Northfield Saturday at 11AM at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester on KRFO AM1390. The winner advances to the section final at 1PM. The Huskies edged Northfield 33-30 on December 14.

Owatonna wrestling opens up defense of its section championship Thursday, February 15 in their home gym at 7PM against the winner of the No. 8 seed Winona vs No. 9 Rochester Century which begins at 6PM. The Huskies are the top seed after a stellar season, including a close victory over Albert Lea February 3 and a solid victory over Faribault last Thursday to secure their second straight Big Nine title.

Owatonna made it to the Section 1AA girls tennis finals, again. And lost to Rochester Mayo, again. This marks the fourth straight year that the Huskies season ended with a loss to the Spartans in the finals, and for the 21st time in the last 22 years that Mayo will represent the section at the state tournament.
