Steele County Fairgrounds Undergoes Makeover
After years of discussions, the Steele County Free Fair Board has taken action regarding the half-mile race track on the fairgrounds. The north wall was recently torn down and the area will be leveled off and planted with grass seed.
It's been many years since the half-mile, banked oval has been used for stock car racing. The reconfiguration will still allow for the enduro auto race during the fair plus the demolition derby and autocross shows.
In a press release, the fair board stated, "This is part of a long-range plan to improve the overall experience for fairgoers, events that are held at the fairgrounds and utilize space that hasn't been used for many years."
The fence on the south side and the east side will remain in place for the time being.
During fair week, vendors and attractions line both sides of the road that skirts the north side of the race track. The flow of people gets pretty congested during busy times. The change should make for easier passage.
